Over the recent weeks, fishing opportunities have been somewhat scarce. However, our last few trips, which were conducted 70 meters off the bar leads, have yielded some notably good fishing sessions.

Snapper limits were achieved in an impressively short time: a mere 1.5 hours of fishing following a 2-hour travel time. While we didn’t land any massive snappers, the average sizes pretty good.

A bit of couta was present, but we happily turned these into effective snapper baits. When cut into strip baits, not only are they irresistible to snapper, but they also tend to stay on the hook better than bonito.

Based on patterns from previous years, I would anticipate that the fish have now moved a bit closer. It might be worthwhile to start exploring towards Gannet Island in the 50-60 meter range. Keep an eye out for birds and dolphins, as they could indicate that something is happening in the area. Additionally, don’t forget to check the sounder to see what might be lurking below.
