Fishing south of Kawhia continues to be productive, with barracouta strips proving top bait, although upcoming strong winds and 5-meter swells suggest a pause in fishing activities this weekend.

Hi All,

Fishing remains similar to the previous week, with successful trips south of Kawhia and near Marakopa. The journey is long but rewarding, often reaching limits by 11 am. Fish are biting hard, with frequent double catches quickly filling the bins. The prime depth seems to be 45-55 meters, in a general area located using the sounder. In the Kawhia region, known for its vast mud and sand areas rather than reefs, locating fish requires careful observation. Birds can indicate the presence of kahawai, often with snapper lurking beneath. Barracouta, cut into strips, remains my bait of choice, and I'll post a video on its preparation soon. Unfortunately, this weekend's weather forecast predicts no fishing due to strong winds and swells up to 5 meters.

Cheers Rob & Jacqui Fitzgerald
